The Pawn Endings-3: Typical Pawn Structures: Protected Passed Pawn

Pawn Structures: 1. Protected Passed Pawn, 2. Connected Passed Pawn and 3.Outside Passed Pawn

Today I\’m going to share about the different types of pawn structures in pawn endings.
What is a Passed Pawn?
A pawn that can\’t be hindered by an opponent\’s pawn on its way to the promotion square is called a \’Passed Pawn\’.

If this pawn is protected by a friendly pawn, then its a \’Protected Passed Pawn\’.

If the second pawn is also a passed pawn then we call it as a \’Connected Passed Pawns\’.

A passed pawn that is far away from the main mass of pawns is called an \’Outside Passed Pawn\’.

1. Protected Passed Pawn:

It is the best example for the Protected passed pawn. Here white wins with the help of the protected passer on c5.
White to play:

Because of the Protected passer on c5, black king must not leave the big square zone c5-f5-f8-c8. By outflank manoeuvre white king can enter in blacks territory and captures the b5 pawn.
